Furnace Replacement or Repair?
Posted by admin on October 14th, 2011 filed in GeneralIt often comes down to two discussions:
1. What is the least expensive way to get heat back in the home?
2. What will be the best investment?
Often a relatively simple repair will get heat back in the home. A thermocouple replacement, an igniter replacement, a fan belt replacement, these are all fairly straightforward and reasonably inexpensive. Often the biggest portion of the cost is the actual trip charge for the technician.
Gas control valves, blower motors, computer boards, or heat exchangers are often substantially more expensive. In those cases it is worthwhile to consider the long term investment aspects.
Spending $900 on a furnace repair for a 65% efficient furnace doesn’t always make sense. Often, spending three times as much for a replacement that will pay off in three years from lower heating bills, is the smart choice. Ask yourself how you would be better off four years from now. You’ve spent the same amount between the fuel costs and repair/replacement costs, in each case, but in one case you have a four year old high efficiency furnace and in the other you have a ~30 year old 65% efficiency furnace.
At the very least consider the options and get quotes from at least two different, credible furnace companies.
